The origin is explicit and it is a mirror. Hardware captures Tally-Hawk to copy components into a captured red-skinned gargoyle, the SilverHawks interrupt before the transfer finishes, and Tally-Hawk beats the result in the air anyway.
The design keeps that logic throughout. Red eye lasers where Tally-Hawk has blue, claws on the wings instead of talons, and the same job of relaying what it sees back to its side. Fourteen appearances make it the most-used Mob bird by a wide margin.
Two derivatives exist. Monotone fabricates the all-metal mass-produced Sky-Shadows in The Fighting Hawks, and Super Birds introduces a vehicle-scale giant that is rebuilt again in The Harder They Fall. Kenner sold both a “Mon*Star with Sky-Shadow” pack and a standalone Sky-Shadow Super Attack Bird.
