The Star Comics run

Stephen Perry wrote all seven, and he is the reason this run is worth more than a footnote. Perry was scripting SilverHawks episodes at the same time, so the comic was not written at arm's length from a style guide the way a licensed tie-in usually is. It came from inside the show. He worked at Marvel, and on Deluxe Comics' Thunder Agents he wrote alongside Steve Ditko. Not many 1987 cartoon tie-ins have that behind them.^[1]

Mike Witherby penciled six of the seven and Howard Bender took issue 6, so the look holds steady across a run that was otherwise being moved around underneath its creative team. The inking changes once and then settles: James Sanders III on the first, Fred Fredericks on everything after. What did for the book was neither the writing nor the art. Marvel wound the Star Comics line up in 1988 and moved the title onto the mainline imprint from issue 6. A bi-monthly book about a show already deep into reruns had no way to build a readership from there, and it ended at seven.
